Towing in Minnesota: the published maximums and your rights
No statewide dollar maximum was verified in the state sources checked in October 2026. The verdict here is the rights layer and the complaint path — never an invented cap.
Rules checked October 2026
Penalties & remedies
If your car is towed in violation of Minnesota law, you are entitled to recover the greater of $100 or two times the actual damages sustained — including the costs of recovering the vehicle, time spent, and transportation costs (statute quoted in U.S. PIRG, Getting Off the Hook, 2021).
Kickbacks
U.S. PIRG's state survey (2022) found no law here banning kickbacks to property owners for private-property tows. If money changed hands behind your tow, that fact still belongs in your complaint.
Who takes the complaint
State Attorney General — Consumer Protection.
