What a clean tow costs: the ATRI benchmark page

The industry measured itself: 490 real invoices. The average clean crash tow, the average predatory bill, and the exhibit to cite in a no-cap state.

The American Transportation Research Institute did the industry a favour it did not enjoy: it read 490 real towing invoices from carriers and sorted them. Average invoice: $11,681.27. Average clean crash tow: $8,925.90. Average predatory bill: $18,154.52. 29.8% of the invoices contained predatory charges; among events over $30,000, 66% were predatory. Excessive rates were experienced by 82.7% of carriers; unwarranted extra charges by 81.8%.

This page exists to be cited. In the roughly 38 states with no heavy rate cap, a dispute is an argument about reasonableness — and reasonableness needs an exhibit. The exhibit is the industry's own arithmetic: a bill at twice the clean average is not a disagreement about price; it is a pattern with a name, measured by the industry's own researchers.

Use it in the demand letter, in the board complaint, and in front of the insurer. The numbers are ATRI's (November 2023); the argument they make is yours.
